World news: medals for Bulgaria, heatwave in Greece, new law in France

Why are we talking about this???

So that we know what is happening in the world and in our country.

France restricts social media for children

France wants to restrict social media for children under 15. The country's parliament has passed a new law. It should protect children from bullying and dangerous content on the Internet. The goal is also to make them spend less time in front of the screen. From September 1, 2026, children under 15 will not be able to create new profiles on TikTok, Instagram and other social networks. And from January 2027, the rule will also apply to old profiles. Educational sites and online encyclopedias will not be restricted.

Many people support the new law. They believe it will protect children from dangers online. Others, however, doubt that the ban will work. They wonder if children will find ways to get around the rules. It is also not yet clear how platforms will verify their age.

Water for stray cats in Greece
In the capital of Greece, Athens, temperatures reached around 40 degrees. The heat is especially dangerous for stray cats. During the hottest hours, they hide in shady and cool places. They move less and sometimes lose their appetite. On the other hand, they have an even greater need for water.
That's why volunteers from the organization "Nine Lives" (in English, this means "Nine Lives") go around the city every day. They leave fresh water, bring food and check the health of more than 500 cats. Local authorities also help them. For example, the municipal service "Urban Fauna" has placed over 130 drinking bowls in different neighborhoods. The water in them must be changed regularly to stay clean. Therefore, the organizations expect the residents of Athens to get involved and fill them with new water. This helps the homeless animals a lot.

Fires in France and Spain

Unfortunately, these countries are not only experiencing heat, but also many fires – so much so that they forced as many as 300,000 people to flee their homes – 220,000 in southeastern France and 105,000 in Spain. Many of them spent the weekend in hastily adapted sports halls and exhibition centers.
The Gironde region has been hit by a so-called „firestorm.“ In this phenomenon, the fires themselves create winds and thunderstorms that further inflame them. French firefighters announced that they are fighting like „David against Goliath“ to save the city of Bordeaux, where another 850,000 people could be affected. This means that their forces are very small compared to the huge fire (the expression comes from the biblical story of the little David who fought against the giant Goliath).

For the moment, the fire near Bordeaux has stopped growing because the winds died down overnight and there was even some rain. Unfortunately, next week will see another heat wave, which will further hamper firefighters.

Two European medals for Yoan Velichkov

Great news from Portugal! Bulgarian Yoan Velichkov won two medals at the European Table Tennis Championships for Youth Under 19. Yoan is currently 18 years old. He first participated in the doubles tournament. His partner was Austrian Julian Rzyhausek. The two played very strongly and reached the final. There they lost to a French pair and remained in second place. That's how they took the silver medals.

After that, Yoan competed on his own. He recorded four consecutive victories and reached the semifinals. This brought him another medal, this time a bronze. Thus, he came home from the championship with silver and bronze. This is also the best ranking for Bulgaria in this competition since 1990. A great success for Yoan and for Bulgarian table tennis!
