Eight medals for Bulgaria!

Because we rejoice together with our athletes!
The last few days have brought us great news from the world of sports! From August 10 to 16, the European Athletics Championships were held in Birmingham, Great Britain. The best athletes from all over Europe competed there. At the same time, the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were held in Frankfurt, Germany. It brought together the strongest gymnasts from all over the world. The competition was particularly important. It could have won the first places for the 2028 Olympic Games. Bulgarian athletes came home from the two championships with a total of eight medals!
Let's go to Birmingham first. The great Alexandra Nacheva won a medal there. She won bronze in the triple jump with 14 meters and 40 centimeters. The triple jump is one of the most interesting disciplines in athletics. After the warm-up, the athlete must make three connected movements: a hop, a step and a jump in the sand. Everything happens very quickly. However, each movement must be precise... Alexandra's medal is special for another reason. Two years ago, she severely broke her ankle. Due to the injury, she missed the Olympic Games in Paris. Now she is back among the best! The other Bulgarian in the triple jump was Gabriela Petrova. She also reached the final and finished in 11th place. Bulgaria has a glorious history in this discipline. Hristo Markov and Tereza Marinova have won Olympic titles in the triple jump.
The most tense Bulgarian moment in Birmingham came in the long jump final. Bozhidar Saraboyukov had only one attempt left. He stepped up and jumped 8 meters and 26 centimeters. The result brought him to third place! Just like Viktoria Angelova at the World Youth Championships, Bozhidar saved his best jump for the very end. There were no more attempts and no room for error. His bronze is the first medal for a Bulgarian man at a European Athletics Championships in 28 years.
And while the Bulgarian athletes were competing in Birmingham, our gymnasts performed great in Frankfurt. They finished the World Championships with six medals! The greatest success was achieved by Stiliyana Nikolova. She became the world champion on clubs. Stiliyana came first out of the eight finalists and received 30.150 points. Then the great wait began. One after another, her rivals took to the carpet. Two of them came very close to her result, but remained only one tenth of a point behind her. When the last gymnast finished, it was already certain: Stiliyana is the world champion!
Bulgaria had been waiting for this title for 25 years. Our previous individual world gold was won by Simona Peycheva in 2001.
Stiliyana also won a silver medal in the all-around. It includes the scores from the combinations with hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon. This result earned Bulgaria a place in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. Stiliyana won another silver in ribbon. There, only five hundredths of a point separated her from the gold.
We also have silver in the team standings. The results of the individual gymnasts and the ensemble are added together for it. Thus, the medal became a common success of the entire Bulgarian team. The ensemble also experienced a very exciting final day. The Bulgarians won bronze for the five-ball combination. A little later, they took to the carpet again. This time, they played with three hoops and two pairs of clubs. Another bronze medal followed! Thus, our gymnasts climbed the world ladder of honor twice in one day.
There were other big stars at both championships. Britain's Amy Hunt won four gold medals in the running. Sweden's Mondo Duplantis cleared 6 meters and 15 centimeters in the pole vault. This is a new record at the European Championships. And Duplantis surprises with new records at every championship. The Brazilian team also made history. The gymnasts won the first two world titles for their country.
And the tally for Bulgaria? One gold, three silver and four bronze medals. A total of eight awards and one already won place for the Olympic Games!
